Design Squad Movie Guide and Fashion Design Project

This is a short movie guide to Design Squad season 1 episode 8 called Functional Fashion. The episode is available free with Amazon prime. The episode is 26 minutes long and features a group of teens competing to create a versatile fashion design. It's great to see the brainstorming and creative thinking as the kids create. The worksheet (1 page) asks questions to keep your students engaged and interested in the movie.

My classes watch the movie as a springboard to a fashion design project. The first is a series of sketches/designs. This project is included (page 2) with the questions and criteria for these drawings. My students work in partners for this. It is very versatile and can be expanded to include presentation of the ideas by students, and I have also expanded it to include a "Design squad" type challenge where I give each group a roll of masking tape and newspapers to create a clothing design. Overall a student favorite!
