Description

This full bundle teaches density, mass, volume, the characteristics of each, how to calculate each, and proper units to use. Appropriate for 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th graders. Could be used as a review or remedial activity for 8th and possibly 9th graders.

Aligned with many common core math standards! Includes a 25 slide PowerPoint, Cornell notes with examples, and an interactive foldable. This assignment works very well in classrooms that utilize interactive notebooks, but can be equally successful in classes that do not use notebooking.

PowerPoint includes embedded videos to aid in student engagement and utilizes AVID strategies such as think, pair, share and Cornell notes. In case you are unfamiliar with AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) it is a college readiness program for elementary through high school students and focuses on high level thinking and engagement with the end goal of student learning and success.

This lesson was created for upper elementary through early high school students and is a great introduction and practice to help students understand the concepts of density mass and volume, what they represent, and how to calculate for each. This is an extremely popular lesson in my classroom! Students learn via creating and decorating a folding “density pyramid” that functions as a mini formula decoder.

Highly engaging, high level thinking activity / lesson. Includes “I will” and “We will” daily goals that teachers may post. “I will” and “we will” goal statements are aligned with the Fundamental Five method of teaching, but will work for any teacher who posts daily class goals or just wants to impress any administrators who walk through their classrooms!

Concepts covered include density, density of different objects, how to solve for density, mass, and volume, importance of units and which units to use, calculation practice, “liquid layers” (density activity and examples), Archimedes, water displacement, and a high level thinking activity wrap up. High level thinking strategies and differentiated activities allow for different learning styles.

Approximately two to three class periods in length. Could easily be made shorter or longer depending on the needs of specific classes. As a point of reference I teach a 50 minute class. Please note: There are two versions of the PowerPoint presentation included in this download, one version is JPEG based and is not password protected. The second version contains transitions, animations, and embedded video. The only way to retain those features is to keep the presentation in the original PowerPoint format. To protect the integrity of my work and to respect the large amount of time I have devoted to developing this resource, the second PowerPoint is protected from editing.

Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money, including problems involving simple fractions or decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Represent measurement quantities using diagrams such as number line diagrams that feature a measurement scale.
Apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real world and mathematical problems. For example, find the width of a rectangular room given the area of the flooring and the length, by viewing the area formula as a multiplication equation with an unknown factor.
Recognize angles as geometric shapes that are formed wherever two rays share a common endpoint, and understand concepts of angle measurement:
Recognize volume as an attribute of solid figures and understand concepts of volume measurement.
A solid figure which can be packed without gaps or overlaps using 𝘯 unit cubes is said to have a volume of 𝘯 cubic units.
