Description

This is a fantastic hands-on inquiry lab involving the density of liquids and solids. Students absolutely love this lab and are shocked at the results. In this exploratory lab students are given four different liquids to observe, they then make a hypothesis based on their density. Students then actually test their hypothesis to see if they are correct and at the end of the lab students have an amazing-looking tower to use in order to come up with a conclusion and analyze their results. I also included an extension lab where students use the process of inquiry to measure the density of four different solids as well. In addition to the lab sheets, I included a PowerPoint that walks students through each part of the lab so you can easily go over the directions and the PowerPoint displays what the results should look like at the end. These labs could be used as either an introduction to density or as a formative assessment. Regardless of how they are used, both of these labs involve drawing, thinking, and analyzing!
