Description
Looking for an interactive and engaging way for students to learn about connotation and denotation, expand their character trait vocabularies, and practice their word choice skills as writers?
This Connotation and Denotation of Character Traits Hands-On Word Sorts Bundle includes eight lessons with guided notes on denotation and connotation, hands-on word sort activities, and a writing activity for students to practice applying character traits with similar denotations and different connotations in context.
This bundle includes 96 character trait adjectives for students to sort by connotation – positive, neutral, and negative – plus a note catcher and writing practice worksheet. These resources can be used for 8 full-length lessons or up to 32 warm ups (do nows, bell ringers, or sponge activities).
WHAT'S INCLUDED
• 96 word sort cards with adjectives that can be used to describe character traits (32 synonym trios: positive, neutral, negative)
• Teaching slides with definitions of denotation and connotation, teacher modeling for the word sort activity, example worksheet with sentences, and answer keys
• Student note catcher
• Worksheet for students to practice writing sentences that show the connotation of specific word choice
• User-friendly Teacher's Guide with detailed lesson plan, variations, and tips for success
❊ Student materials and Teacher's Guide are in printable PDF format; Teaching Slides are in Microsoft Powerpoint™.
✧ BONUS ✧ Hands-on materials for all the teacher modeling examples are included!
HOW IT WORKS
• Students take notes as they learn about the difference between denotation and connotation and the three types of connotation: positive, neutral, and negative.
• Students work collaboratively or independently to sort words into groups that have similar meanings, then organize by positive, neutral, or negative connotation.
• Students choose one of the synonym trios from the activity and write three sentences that show the connotation of each word.
Please Note: The note catcher and worksheet are the same across all four resources in this bundle. There are also seven repeated slides in addition to 36 unique teaching slides. This redundancy is reflected in the deeply discounted bundle price.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
• Understand the difference between denotation and connotation.
• Identify the connotation of words as positive, neutral, or negative.
• Develop a vocabulary of adjectives that can be used to describe character traits.
• Apply an understanding of connotation when reading to analyze how the writer’s choice of words impacts the meaning of the text.
