Decodable Passages: Research-Based Reading Instruction!

Designed to provide teachers with a research-based resource for early reading instruction, these decodable passages feature short vowel words containing the digraphs CH, SH, TH, and CK (CCVC and CVCC format). In addition, CVC words and high frequency words are also included in the passages. You will receive 3 decodable passages for each digraph in both color and blackline versions for students, as well as a 4-week implementation plan for teachers. Each week of the plan will focus on a specific digraph. Week 1 will begin with the CH Digraph Passages, Week 2 will move to the SH Digraph Passages, and so on. Built on the model of the Transfer to Text process, the implementation plan allows students to read 3 passages over the course of a week with support gradually reduced each day. By the end of the week, the goal is for students to read the third passage independently. This process facilitates the transfer of learned phonetic skills to actual reading, while also building reading fluency. Please note: You may choose to follow the implementation plan provided in this product, or you may choose to disregard the plan and use the passages as you wish.

• Day 1 (Monday): Passage 1 (Students highlight skill words, read highlighted words, and read the passage with highlighted words)
• Day 2 (Tuesday): Passage 1 (Students read the passage again with highlighted words, and then read a non-highlighted copy of the passage)
• Day 3 (Wednesday): Passage 2 (Students highlight skill words, then read the passage with highlighted words)
• Day 4 (Thursday): Passage 2 (Students read a non-highlighted copy of the passage)
• Day 5 (Friday): Passage 3 (Students read a non-highlighted copy of the passage)

In this product, I have included an organized 4-week implementation plan for teachers. In addition, I have included the specific daily plan of instructional routines at the bottom of each blackline passage to serve as a quick reference during your lessons.

Each passage has 3 different printing options: Blackline with Implementation Notes at the bottom, Color Version with no Implementation Notes, and Blackline Version with no Implementation Notes.

Materials Needed:

Each week, students will need highlighters to highlight the skill words in each passage. In addition, you will need to print two copies of Passage 1, two copies of Passage 2, and 1 copy of Passage 3 for each student. That’s it!

Implementation Suggestions:

This activity was created and designed to be implemented in either a small group or individualized instructional setting. This is an ideal decodable reading activity for your reading groups. It will also work perfectly as an intervention activity. This activity should be teacher-guided to provide the appropriate amount of support and direction.

The Blackline Version with Implementation Notes at the bottom of each page was designed with teachers in mind. The notes will serve as a quick reference during your instruction. Simply find the day at the bottom of the page and follow the routine. All of the skill words are already listed for you! The Color Version would be perfect to print, laminate, and add to your classroom reading center. The Blackline Version without Implementation Notes would be great to send home for extra reading practice. You can also opt to use this version for your instruction if you would rather not have the Implementation Notes at the bottom of each page.
