Bring this valuable teaching and learning tool to your own classroom!

Learning centers are an amazing way to cover a complex topic in the middle school history classroom. Learning centers encourage high-level, independent thinking and allow students to learn about important events, people, and places with a level of depth and complexity that is hard to duplicate through other instructional methods.

Learning centers (or stations as I call them in my class) can either supplement your lesson on a particular topic, or they can provide the primary instruction on that topic. They are often multidisciplinary, showing students that history is not only connected to other school subjects, but also to their own life. Technology is often incorporated along with other resources and texts. This learning centers kit, for example, incorporates reading, writing, science, infographics, videos, and creativity.

Students will analyze the Declaration of Independence and its history through five stations with this activity - historical background and the date of Independence Day, the science behind preserving the Declaration, the background and fates of the signers, creating a Declaration brochure, and a video webquest station

By the time they finish with this activity, your students will have a broad understanding of the Declaration of Independence!
