Description

This powerpoint builds on the Decimals - Representing the Value of a Decimal with Grids Presentation. This lesson focuses on equivalent decimals such as 0.8 = 0.80 = 0.800. This presentation allows students to understand why this holds true and allows them to understand the value of decimals as they are represented on grids (tenths, hundredths, and thousandths grids).

This is a powerpoint presentation that would well for Promethean and non-promethean board users. The powerpoint introduces decimals and demonstrates how the value of a decimal can be represented on a grid (tenths, hundredths, thousands grids). Relates to 5th grade math common core standard NBT.1 (Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a number in the one place represents 10 times as much as the place its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left). This lesson also be utilized to explain decimal-fraction equivalence/conversion.

For Activboard users: lesson can be made more interactive by having students/teachers shade in the grids on the promethean board. Then when you click to the next slide, the answer appears. This is a fun way for students to be involved and see if they were correct.

Non-activboard users: I originally planned to utilize the Promethean board, but my pen was not working on the day of the lesson. The lesson was still great without the extra technology. Still very great visuals for students to understand decimals.
