What educators are saying

This is a great addition to math centers or as a mini-project to go along with decimals in math, or economics in social studies! I like to use this either when my class prepares for JA BizTown or as an extension activity when we've come back from there.
This was used to introduce project based learning to the upper elementary students in a home school. They enjoyed it.

Description

This real world math project is the perfect way for students to practice adding and subtracting decimals in your classroom! It is a cross-curricular project as it incorporates both economics and math.

This project includes both a printable and a digital version for use with Google Classroom.

Description:

Each student is in charge of their family's personal budget for two weeks. They must fill out a bank register by adding and subtracting decimals. They also write checks to pay bills in order to save enough money for a family trip.

The project is easy to grade as all of the registers are based on pre-set financial decisions. It includes a reflection page with four questions and an extension page that students can use to create their own "Week 3" budget.

Topics Included:

Economics:

1. Income

2. Spending

3. Saving

4. Personal Budget

Math:

1. Add and subtract decimals

2. Writing decimals in standard, word, and expanded form

3. Rounding decimals

My students were SO ENGAGED throughout this project and asked for more math like this! They worked very hard to add and subtract correctly because they wanted to find out if there would be enough money for the trip. It was challenging - but it really pushed my math students and required them to persevere. There's a lot to be said about math in the real world!
