Description

Introduce decimals using students fraction knowledge through a fun art project!

Students will make the connection between fractions with a denominator of 100 and what it looks like as a decimal. The analysis questions that go along with the finished product help students see that 100 hundredths is a whole number. They will also use a visual representation to put decimals in order from least to greatest.

Now you can use this resource digitally with google slides. Upon downloading, you will receive a pdf that includes the paper product and also a link to make a copy of the google slides. You can assign this activity to your students by giving them a copy link to make their own copy. In google slides, your students can create their own decimal art and answer questions.

Use decimal notation for fractions with denominators 10 or 100. For example, rewrite 0.62 as 62/100; describe a length as 0.62 meters; locate 0.62 on a number line diagram.
Compare two decimals to hundredths by reasoning about their size. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two decimals refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual model.
