December Holidays Bundle of Worksheets in Print and Digital with Easel

This packet of worksheets focus on main idea, author's purpose, and context clues. It contains 10 pages.

4 pages (4 passages) focus on MAIN IDEA

For each passage, they will answer two multiple-choice questions.

1. "Which of the following sentences best states the main idea of the passage?"

2. "Which would be the best title for this passage?"

I have found that my students struggle with this type of question on multiple-choice tests because in some ways it is somewhat subjective what the best title would be. Therefore, I included a DETAILED ANSWER KEY that explains why a certain answer is the best title for the passage.

2 pages focus on AUTHOR'S PURPOSE

Students read five passages and determine whether the author's purpose is to persuade, inform, entertain, describe, or explain.

2 pages focus on CONTEXT CLUES

Students read paragraphs and use context clues to choose the correct meaning of the word (ten multiple-choice items).

********These resources are available in three formats:

1. Traditional Printables- Print the PDF and distribute the pencil-and-paper worksheet.
2. Easel Activities- With this paperless format, an interactive layer has been added to each original PDF! Students can complete this activity on a device. Students read each sentence or paragraph and answer each question that follows. The main idea and context clues worksheets contain a multiple-choice format, where students move the circles to select their answers. The author's purpose worksheet contains a short-answer format, where students type a complete sentence in the answer box that explains the author's primary purpose for writing the passage.
3. Easel Assessments- Students complete this self-grading quiz on a device, as well. After reading a passage and related question, students select the best answer from a list of four possible answer choices. With this option, the teacher chooses whether or not his or her students receive immediate feedback.
