What educators are saying

I work with students with emotional and behavioral disabilities and reading is a struggle. It is wonderful to find topical articles to be read in science class. Thanks so much for your hard work!
My students really liked this resource. It was easy to use and didn't require much prep time. My students were able to practice their skills and have fun while doing so. Fun way to practice science while having fun and celebrating the holidays.

Description

Incorporate the winter holidays into your December science units using these 5 engaging PRINT and DIGITAL science activities. Students will learn about peppermint, gumdrops, reindeer, famous scientist Ada Lovelace, and the winter solstice by reading articles and completing STEM challenges. These December activities work great as sub plans, to tie Christmas to science, or as a fun way to incorporate science before the holiday recess.

Students will learn about:

  • What a peppermint is
  • How a gumdrop was created
  • Characteristics of mammals
  • Reindeer
  • Famous woman scientist, Ada Lovelace
  • Winter solstice
  • Seasons

December science activities include:

  • Teacher instructions to distribute the digital versions through your secure learning management system such as Google Classroom, Schoology, SeeSaw, etc.
  • Tips and ideas to complete the STEM activities in your classroom
  • Printable and digital components for:
    • Peppermint activity: Includes a one-page reading with comprehension questions and a STEM activity to build a candy cane bridge. The reading comprehension will give students the history behind peppermint, while the STEM activity will connect to science and engineering practices.
    • Gumdrop activity: Includes a one-page science text and comprehension questions to learn about the history of gumdrops. Students will also create a candy tower using their design and engineering skills.
    • Mammals and Reindeer activity: Students will first learn about mammals and then relate that information to reading about reindeer. Comprehension questions and a graphic organizer are also included.
    • Winter Solstice activity: Students will read about the history and science behind the December 21 solstice.
    • December Scientist in the News: Science text that teaches about the contributions woman scientist, Ada Lovelace, made to technology.

Ways to use the December activities in your classroom:

  • Use the December science activities to supplement your science curriculum.
  • Use the winter science activities as a fun Friday activity.
  • Engage students in winter science themes that include collaborative learning opportunities.
  • Great for sub plans! Many of these activities are printable (or can be digitally assigned) and go. This is a great way to keep engagement and learning going while you are out of the classroom.
  • Science stations: Set up each activity at a different science station and let students rotate through them throughout the month.
  • Use the week before the holiday or winter recess.

Teacher feedback:

  • I did this with my students for Saturday School, and they were so engaged. Because of the demands of our district, we are not able to teach science the way we would like to and how often we would like to,l so when they get to do science they are so excited.
  • My kids loved these activities!! They were very engaged and did a good job of working together!! Thank you!!
  • These Science activities were great to have while on distance learning. My students enjoyed learning about reindeer as well as other topics. I can't wait to be back in the classroom to do the activities as well.
  • I loved the reading articles and questions that went along with the activities. Even though we were unable to complete the activities due to distance learning, I plan on using this in the future with my students during winter.
  • A great blend of content area reading and hands-on activities is perfect for December. It is so hard to find meaningful activities for older students that are still fun for the holidays! Thanks!
