David and Goliath Preschool Lesson: Stick/Finger Puppet Craft

This resource is a preschool lesson activity for the story of David and Goliath in the Bible. Kids can make their own David and Goliath stick puppets (or finger puppets), then act out the story in dramatic play.

This is one of the lessons included in the full Preschool Bible Curriculum (growing bundle, to be completed soon).

Preschoolers and Kindergarteners learn best through natural play opportunities. That's why teachers and homeschool parents love to incorporate dramatic play into the weekly routine. This resource is a packet of materials for role-playing the story of David and Goliath (found in 1 Samuel 17).

Use the colored pages or the black and white pages (for the child to color him/herself). Assist or direct your child to cut out the pictures and prepare the puppets, story scene and/or face masks. Roleplay with your child, or let brothers/sisters/classmates (in small groups) act out the story.

2 title pages, 2 title posters for roleplay performances (one color, one b&w), 2 pages of 4 printable finger puppets (2 David, 2 Goliath) in color as well as black and white, 1 story scene (in color and b&w), and bonus pages: 2 roleplay masks (David and Goliath) in color as well as black and white, and 2 pages of 2 roleplay props (slingshot and 5 stones) in color as well as black and white make this a 16-page pack.

Tasks Include:

• Coloring and cutting (fine motor opportunities)
• Dramatic roleplay
• Technology skills (if recording the dramatic play scene for viewing later)

How to Use:

1. Read aloud the story of David and Goliath from the Bible to your child. Allow him/her to use the finger puppets to help you tell or retell the story.
2. Use alongside a favorite chant or song as fingerplay props.
3. Prep ahead of time for use as a busy box activity, playmat, or file folder game in center time/ dramatic playtime.
4. Allow your child to create a video using the props and/or puppets to tell the story. Host a showing (complete with popcorn and candy!) for family or friends.
