How it works:
Each day students will fill in a journal page. Every page has a different writing prompt (180 total). These prompts cover a wide range of fiction and non-fiction writing styles including poems, short stories, lists, explaining processes and more. Some pages also contain a space for students to illustrate their writing.
At the beginning of the package there is a student page introducing the 3 R’s of editing Reread, Review, Revise, and the editing checkbox system is introduced. I suggest that students complete this as they edit, to practice editing after every piece of writing. Also included at the beginning of the package is a handout with writing tips, and synonyms for commonly used words such as ‘because’ and ‘said’.
All prompts are non-denominational. Prompts are not specific to any one country or historical event. They are not geared towards specific times of year (however weather such as snow, and times of the year such as summer vacation are occasionally mentioned) and can be completed in any order. For this reason I have left the pages un-numbered, so teachers can choose to remove certain prompts or change the order of pages to suit the needs of their students.
At the end of the package is a student glossary which contains spaces for students to write definitions of difficult words they might come across in their writing, This space could also be used as a space to write synonyms for commonly used words to vary writing and expand vocabulary.
Additionally, there is a page of student certificates that can be printed out and used to celebrate writing journal milestones such as 50 or 100 prompts completed.
These prompts are a great tool to aid in the teaching of writing skills such as: point of view and opinion, explaining events or processes, and writing narratives.
