Each of these 180 Fifth Grade Math Warm Ups includes three sections:

  • Part 1: Mental Math- We all know the power of giving kids an early win!  Each math bell ringer starts with times table and fact fluency drills.  This serves two purposes- reviewing key facts and giving every kid in your class a chance to feel successful right off the bat!
  • Part 2: Focus Computation Skill- this section offers “numbers only” practice of a key fifth-grade skill, such as “3 x 2 Digit Multiplication” or “Adding Unlike Fractions.”  Kids master the skill in this section and then they are later spiraled into the word problem section.
  • Part 3 Odd Days: Word Problems-  on odd-numbered days students unpack a word problem in 4 steps- Picture, Estimate, Solve, and Answer in a Complete Sentence.  In this section students continue to practice the skills from Part 2, but at a higher level.
  • Part 3 Even Days: “Milton’s Mix-Ups”- students apply their knowledge from the computational skills in Part 2 to an error analysis problem.  Here a fictional student “Milton” always gets confused.  Students must explain Milton’s error using mathematical vocabulary and then solve the problem correctly.
