Description

This product includes 20 Halloween themed stories, each approximately a ½ page long, Depending on the grade level and the needs of your students, you can choose to do a “shared”, partner, or independent reading of the story. After reading, the bottom portion of the page is completed by reading 6 statements and determining if they are “true”, “false”, or (you as the reader) “don’t know” based on the content of the story. If a statement is “true” or “false”, then the reader uses a blue pen to underline the statement and phrases or sentences within the text that provide direct or literal evidence that supports the statement. A green pen is used to underline the statement and text evidence if it is information that was used to make an inference.

An answer key is provided for all of the stories, however many of the statements could be underlined with green or blue, which creates great material for group discussion. In order for our students to begin developing the higher level comprehension skills and strategies necessary for the “close reading” the Common Core State Standards are expecting of our students, teacher-led discussions that include text evidence are a great way to model using effective comprehension strategies.

I created these high interest short stories and statements as manageable, easy to access material that could be used as a daily “bell ringer” or a 10 minute transition activity to help teachers “fit in” this type of comprehension practice into a super busy schedule.

Please take a look at some examples of the stories available in this packet in the preview. Also, you may like to look at similar products I have available on the following topics:
