Debate ANY Novel or Play
This 66 page, no prep, no paper marking resource gives you everything you need to run a dozen classes for debate beginners.
Complete with:
detailed step-by-step lesson plans
graphic organizers
rubrics (teacher, peer and self-evaluation)
a 23 slide debate basics PowerPoint
a how-to video
games
multiple choice quiz
two debate posters
Even the teacher doesn’t need to know how to debate; the PowerPoint and graphic organizers hand-hold the students through the steps of how to debate without the need for lectures.
Beginner friendly!
-- Debate terminology is kept to a minimum.
-- Speaking times have been reduced. This is not only kind to newbies, but also allows two debates to fit into one lesson.
-- Two short, fun debates on light subjects ease students into the unit.
-- Each book debate topic is accompanied by a graphic organizer that gives students a jump-start by suggesting a few arguments they might use.
Promotes thorough book analysis
Students have to search their books to find events and quotes that prove their points. There are 15 debate topics, enough for the very largest classes, with some to spare. A few of the topics might not work perfectly for every novel or play, but most will apply to every book. The resolutions are about the plot, characters, themes, and the book’s relevance to society.
Differentiation
Each debate topic is accompanied by a graphic organizer that suggests a few points speakers might use- especially helpful for younger or struggling students. With strong, older classes you might decide to only give the resolution, without the argument suggestions. Please check out the preview to see a couple of these organizers.
Debate and Public Speaking Games
These 12 argument and organization games will be invaluable to any speech and debate class, or high school ELA class. The games will not only develop key debate and public speaking skills but also stimulate speed of thought and creativity.
Duration
Most of the games will take much of class to complete, but a few are short and can be used as time-fillers. The duration will often depend on the size of the class. With a large class some of the games, like ‘Join Our Club!’ ‘Arguing the Opposite Point of View’ and ‘If I Were Not Human, I Would Be,’ can take the whole lesson.
Skills
The argument games help students develop arguments and see ideas and issues from different perspectives. The organization games assist students to recognize what constitutes a well-organized speech with effective transitions. Three of the games are scrambled speeches that the students have to order correctly. One is by Lou Gehrig, one by Malala Yousafzai and one by Greta Thunberg.
What is included
12 games
26 slides of colorful, easy-to-follow PowerPoint presentation instructions are included, to explain some of the more complex games to the students

Set-up
-- Most games do not require prep.
-- One of the games use topic cards of different varieties with enough topics for every student in the room to have a different one. You will need to photocopy just one stack of three or four pages for the game. If you copy them onto card stock, or laminate them, they will last until your retirement party.
--The three scrambled speeches require photocopying, one for every pair in the class. The speeches in their correct orders can be shown with the included PowerPoint.
