Introduction
Every child loves to talk about his/her family and share interesting facts and details about each family member. This project is an interesting and engaging way to encourage each child to find out more about his/her family and culture. This is a great activity to use for Back to School Night, Open House, or a Multicultural Day.

About the Project
Before discussing the project with the students, make your own cultural paper doll and poster. Share your completed doll and poster with the students. (Make sure when decorating your doll to use items that are readily available in most homes. For students who may not have access to these items, either set up a “paper doll station” in the classroom with materials for the students to use in decorating their dolls or send home small baggies of materials—glue, scissors, yarn, scrap construction paper, wiggly eyes, etc.—for students to use at home.)

Photocopy the letter onto plain paper. Photocopy the poster and doll pattern onto cardstock or construction paper. Staple the three pages together to send home with the students. When the items are returned, arrange them on a 12” x 18” piece of construction paper and display in the classroom.

Extension Idea
Hang a large map on the wall. Have the students write their names on 2” x 4” pieces of tag or construction paper. Tape a piece of string to the back of each name card. Use a thumb tack to tack the other end of the string to each student’s native country. How many different countries and continents did the students in the class come from?
