What educators are saying

Always looking to expand my toolkit with different ways of teaching the same materials. It's so great to have lessons like this to help change things up for my diverse batch of learners!

Description

Use this 21 page powerpoint to introduce senior secondary students (Year 10 to 12) to the four main elements of film (cinematography, mise-en-scene, sound, and editing) as they pertain to cult cinema. I have used this resource in high school English, Film and Media classes.

Content:

It includes quotes from filmmakers, definitions and adjacent examples of each slide. It also features questions to prompt student thinking and highlights important film language and terminology. The focus on the content is on cult films. The powerpoint includes a myriad of shots from Juno (2007), Gattaca (1997), Napoleon Dynamite (2004), Bladerunner (1982) and The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975). Note: the preview video takes a while to stream / download as I have used high resolution images.

Teaching and Learning:

I use the selected images to provoke discussion among students. I also get students to ask questions of each other about the images by giving them sentences starters, for example:

  • How would you describe the style...?
  • What does the costuming say about...?
  • Which cinematography method results in... ?

I also make this powerpoint available to students after class so they can review the terminology and examples for self-study. This powerpoint can be used a structure model too for a media presentation where students have to watch a film and outline how the four elements were employed, using a powerpoint / slide show.

Further Resources:

For more background and criteria to define cult cinema I suggest you visit the Cult Movie Research site (http://www.cultmovieresearch.com/cult_context.shtml). Here you will find criteria such as innovation, badass, and transgression as benchmarks for defining the scope and parameters of cult film.

I hope you find this helpful. If you have a question, please ask and I'll respond within 48 hours. Also, if you have time please check out my other resources, including the freebies.

Good luck and if no one else tells you, you are making a difference. Thanks for being a teacher!
