Description

Foldable reviews horizontal, vertical and oblique (diagonal) cross sections for the following 3-D figures:

Sphere
Cone
Rectangular Prism
Triangular Pyramid
Cylinder

Foldable is editable and can be modified to swap out different 3-D figures.

This is a great overview of cross sections. I have students write the name of the 2-D shape in the blank area to the right of each shape. I have students pretend they are in Fruit Ninja and we simulate the different types of cuts or "chops". You can modify and have students draw the 2-D shape as well. After filling out the inside, I have students brainstorm with students the "big idea" of cross sections: horizontal cuts result in a 2-D shape similar to the base, vertical cuts result in 2-D shapes similar to the sides or faces, and diagonal cuts often result in stretched out bases (with some exceptions, of course!) We then fill out the front of the foldable once we discuss as a group. You can also do the front first and present the big idea to them before breaking it down. On the second day, I do mini stations: a play doh lab, matching activity, card game, computer activities (there are great online simulators for cross sections!), etc. I'd post my these activities but I bought them on TpT from other great educators. When I get back to school, having survived the blizzard of March 2017, I will find my lesson plan file and post with this assignment. You will have to find the activities on TpT though.
