Description

At dusk, it … happens. Crop Circles have become a pastime of sorts around the world. Originally considered to be the work of aliens, they’ve baffled millions with their elaborate designs and timeliness of their work. With knowledge of the unit circle, radians and degrees students will be able to construct these masterpieces in short order.

In this 21st Century Math Project, you will be given a mapping to the Content Standards, an outline for how to implement the project, 3 assignments and one project for students to use. ***THIS PRODUCT HAS BEEN UPDATED WITH A GOOGLE SLIDES INTERACTIVE VERSION INCLUDED. REDOWNLOAD IF YOU HAVE IT ALREADY***

-- In "Crop Circle Trainee”, students will practice using shading regions of circles using radians or degrees.

-- In “Concentric Crops”, students will shade regions of circles that are concentric or overlapping using radians and degrees. This is a raise in the level of difficulty. Make it clear for students the difference between “between” instructions and “entire” instructions.

-- In “Crop Spree”, students will work on one of four crop circle instructions that now include the equations of circles. This can work nicely as small groups. Each team is responsible for interpreting the instructions and diagraming the shading.

-- And finally, in “The Next One”, students will apply their skills to make their own crop circle designs. They will construct their own design and must include instruction for creating it. I have required them to include 8 circles with at least 2 overlapping circles and at least 2 concentric circles, but you can tweak these requirements to work for you.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Create equations in two or more variables to represent relationships between quantities; graph equations on coordinate axes with labels and scales.
Understand radian measure of an angle as the length of the arc on the unit circle subtended by the angle.
Explain how the unit circle in the coordinate plane enables the extension of trigonometric functions to all real numbers, interpreted as radian measures of angles traversed counterclockwise around the unit circle.
Derive the equation of a circle of given center and radius using the Pythagorean Theorem; complete the square to find the center and radius of a circle given by an equation.
