    Description

Critical thinking | Life of Pi | Law, Ethics, Utilitarianism, Necessity

An interesting note: this court case summary debate involves the murder of a boy named Richard Parker!!!

Life of Pi and Dilemma #1 (OVER 20% discount)

I teach LIFE OF PI and then my COURT CASE SUMMARY DEBATE in several of my courses. These two products go especially well together. The novel is one of my favorites to teach as it raises so many interesting questions. The SUMMARY DEBATE engages students in critical thinking - encouraging them to develop arguments using the facts in the case over mere expression of opinion.

Both the novel and my COURT CASE SUMMARY DEBATE immerse the students in philosophical reasoning while they tackle the issues of cannibalism, human dignity, necessity, survival, justice, and ethics.

The issue of cannibalism is obviously raised in both and cannibalism is a topic that students find intriguing and challenging at the same time. Most students have strong feelings/thoughts regarding the consumption of human remains. The conversation encourages students to think about what it means to be human if there is a soul, and how religion impacts our thoughts as regards death.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE | INFORMATIONAL TEXT | PHILOSOPHY, LAW, ETHICS, DEBATE

"My co-teacher and I teach a full inclusive class of seniors, and we wanted some active lessons that could also be done via google classroom (if we had a quarantined kid, etc.) that made them think and were engaging. We knew they'd get a kick out of this lesson, but we were not prepared for them to become obsessed with it lol!"
