Creative Writing and Drawing Activity Language Arts Haiku Visual Art Activity

This activity combines writing, language arts, and visual arts in a way that is fun and engaging! These creative writing and drawing workouts come in a set of 3. The idea is simple-- students create an imaginative drawing using their creativity and drawing skills by incorporating the pre-drawn shapes or lines in each box. Next, students create a poem or short story below the drawing.

You can use them in a variety of ways--- after testing, when learning about poetry or Haikus, as a sub lesson plan, or for those times when you need an extra activity to fill some spare time. I have personally had 3rd graders use these all the way up to 12th grade and each time I use them, my students ask for more! This is a great way for ELA teachers to incorporate visual art to reinforce learning and creative writing. Each workout sheet takes students about one class hour to complete depending on age and ability level.

The example shown was used as a haiku lesson. The drawing provided the subject matter for each haiku poem.

-Use of descriptive language lesson (have students use at least one adjective or verb in their short story)
