Description

ABOUT THIS LESSON:

I created this writing lesson series for teachers transitioning to distance learning with their students. It is a fun creative writing activity ideal for 7th, 8th, and/or 9th grade students. The activities in this lesson series  will take your students 3-4 days. This purchase includes a step-by-step Google Slideshow that you can push to students via Google Classroom.

IMPLEMENTATION INTO YOUR ONLINE CLASSROOM:

There are three digital activities  that students complete. The first activity students complete is on a digital note-taking doc. The doc. correlates with the slideshow and includes instructions that tell students which slides they need to access to fill out their document. This lesson and slideshow teach students all about the vignette writing form. Further, students also review several literary devices (alliteration, repetition, allusion,. mood, simile, metaphor, imagery, etc.)  and complete several practice activities within their note-guide to make sure they have  a strong understanding of the vignette writing form and devices. The purpose of these review activities is to prepare students to create a vignette of their own in which they incorporate literary devices into their writing.

The next day, students can work on the second activity, which is also a digital google doc. that you can push to Google Classroom. This activity has students complete a prewriting activity and several questions that have them organize their ideas before they begin their vignette.

The third lesson is to craft their vignettes on the third activity doc. provided. The prompt asks students to create a vignette about their lives in this moment. There is a lot of freedom of choice for the mood and theme of their work, as well as many examples to support them within each activity.

I hope your students enjoy the activity. I love having students write vignettes because they always surprise me with their creativity. Teachers shouldn’t be afraid to write a vignette alongside students! You can have students post links to their poems in the comment feed of Google Classroom (if they want to share them) so that their peers can read their work. My students love reading their vignettes to the class. You can also have a few students a day read their poems in a class zoom meeting to share their hard work.
