What educators are saying

I used this in my after-school drama club. The graphic organizers helped the students plan out how they were going to rewrite their fairytale. We did it as a play though instead of an essay. Great resource!
This resource was SO fun! My creative writing students and I had a blast working on fairytale rewrites, and this resource was really helpful in breaking it all down. I will definitely be using this again next year!

Description

Have students rewrite a fairy tale in this imaginative, fun, and scaffolded project for creative writing students! Teach point-of-view and other story elements without spending days helping students get over their writer's blocks with this Rewrite a Fairy Tale Project.

For this fairy tale rewrite project, students will learn about point-of-view before applying a new one to a well-known children's story by rewriting a tale from the villain's perspective.

Using the included slideshow, teachers will introduce this project with a free write and by teaching the literary term "point-of-view". Then, students will use the included outlining sheet to brainstorm their villain's version of events in an original tale.

Once students have rough drafts, they will use the included peer-editing sheet to help one another create their best work.

Prior to class, teachers would need to find a mentor text of a rewritten fairy tale to read in class (suggestions with links made in the lesson plan).

This Fairy Tale Rewrite Project makes for a perfect summative assessment, enrichment project, or supplement to a folktale or short story unit.
