What educators are saying

I have looked at and used several different dissection labs and this one is by far my favorite. Easy to follow and the students seem to like it, too. Includes several different reinforcement activities, including a fun bingo review.

Description

Make your crayfish dissection experience as easy-to-implement and impactful as possible by following this detailed two-day dissection experience.

*No prior learning is required prior to this dissection! I personally use this resource during the Arthropoda Unit in my Zoology course.

Structures covered by the crayfish dissection: cephalothorax, abdomen, carapace, cervical groove, rostrum, compound eyes, antennae, antennules, uropods, telson, chelipeds, walking legs, swimmerets, gonopods, maxillipeds, maxillae, mandibles, anus, gills, heart, digestive gland, anterior gastric muscles, posterior gastric muscles, mandibular muscles, stomach, intestine, abdominal muscles, testes, ovaries, green glands, ventral nerve cords

Included in this activity:

  • 2 page teacher guide
  • 4-page dissection packet
  • Physiology chart (lists what each structure does)
  • Internal and external anatomy diagrams (6 total; real pictures!)
  • Conclusion question page and key
  • Labeling review activity and key
  • BINGO review activity
  • 15+ minute video companion to the dissection
  • Digital versions to all resources except BINGO (through Google Slides™)

How long will this activity take?

My learners typically finish the dissection in 60 - 80 minutes. I split the dissection into two days and review for one day. The additional review activities (optional, but fun and meaningful) can take anywhere from 30-60 minutes.

How do you split it into two days?

  • Homework before the dissection - watch the external anatomy video
  • Day 1: Dissect and observe the external anatomy. Finish class by watching the internal anatomy video.
  • Day 2: Dissect the internal anatomy. Finish by completing the conclusion questions and playing a few quick rounds of BINGO.
  • Day 3: Play BINGO again and complete the labeling activity.

Who can complete this activity?

It was designed for students in 9th through 12th grade, but the language is concise and easy-to-understand. 7th and 8th grade learners will still be able to complete it!

What makes this resource so special?

  • The 4-page lab packet actually explains how to find each structure and what each structure does. The packet and diagram include large and easy-to-see pictures, making finding structures as simple as possible.
  • The text in all of the resources is editable, allowing you to change this resource to meet your needs.
  • This resource provides two to three full days of activities that all tie together, creating a cohesive and impactful learning experience.
  • The included video serves as a suitable substitute for dissection-hesitant students or absent students.
