Counting to 100 and Create - Kindergarten Math Center (7 Activities)

Have your students practice counting and representing numbers up to 100 in a fun, hands-on way using building blocks to reinforce numbers. The Jan 2019 update included: sums to 20, comparing by 10's to 120, and rolling to 100. There are now more than 7 activities that can be mixed and matched when needed to practice fluency for PreK-1 students. (Pair with building blocks and you're ready for practice!)

Center Overview:
The idea behind this center was for fluency practice but also the opportunity to have design thinking & “play” time in the busy day of a classroom that often gets overlooked.

There are roughly 6 very open ended and student led centers within this resource. For success and creating, students should be working with some type of building brick for each center that’s easy for counting and making.

7 Activities Included + How To:

Roll to 100:

Students need a bucket of building bricks, a dice, and a Count and Create: Roll to 100 Mat. Students can play alone or with a partner by taking turns rolling the dice and representing each roll on the 10 frames until hitting 100. Students can follow up and count by 10’s after successfully rolling up to 100. After hitting 100, student should build a 100 piece structure of choice!

Composing Cards + Paper Recording Sheet:

Provide students with the 10 composing cards and building bricks to solve (optional recording sheet for accountability). Students will solve each card using building bricks. Once solving all 10 cards, students will use all the blocks from the sums to create a structure of choice.

Double Composing + Game Mat:

Introduce this game after the 10 composing cards have been mastered. Using the same 10 cards, students will pull two at a time, solve, and a build a structure with only 2 sums at time.

Comparing 10’s to 120:

Using the Head Cards, Comparison Word Cards, and 10 Frames of choice – give students partners (or individuals) both of the comparing mats. Students will choose 2 number cards, place on the mat and represent the number using 10 Frame cards. For the building challenge, students will flip over a comparing task card – and build their structure according to the task!

Matching Sets/Representing :

Similar the comparing task, students will match the correct number of 10-frames with the number head card. Once all numbers counting by 10’s from 10-120 have been represented. Students will flip over a blue brick card – whatever number is on the blue brick is the number students with “Match” or provide an equal set to when building. Example: If the blue brick says, 80 – students will count out 80 bricks and build!

Rote Counting up to 20 + Traceable

Provide students with building blocks, numbers to 20 sheet, and a building surface. Students will count out the designated number of blocks using the number sheet. Once counted, give students time to build a maze/structure using the quantity of blocks that matches their number sheet.

After building , provide students with the Independent Activity Sheet for Tracing Numbers to 20

Rote Counting Beyond 20 to 100:

Provide students with building blocks and a number sheet of choice. Students will count out the designated number of blocks using the number sheet. After counting, students can build a structure and use the block recording sheet to represent their number with draw blocks and writing it out.
