    Description

Number sense is a concept that explains a child’s ability to both understand and use numbers in practice. Providing materials for kids to count and connect objects and numbers encourages children to see that numbers are more than words. It gives them the opportunity to practice looking for patterns and relationships between numbers. These counting activities will help students understand 1:1 correspondence and that objects have a numeric value.

Make counting practice fun for your young learners with these twelve thematic sets, which increase in difficulty as the year progresses. This is particularly helpful for practice because the objects are presented in different arrangements as opposed to all in straight lines.

How do you use these counting cards?
Choose a themed set of counting cards, place them around the classroom, and let students walk the room with a clipboard and recording sheet. Students count the objects on the cards and record their answers on one of two answer sheets. Alternate Options: Place counting cards in your math center or in sensory bins if you prefer stationary practice for your students.

Count to 100 by ones and by tens.
Write numbers from 0 to 20. Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0-20 (with 0 representing a count of no objects).
Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality.
When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object.
Understand that the last number name said tells the number of objects counted. The number of objects is the same regardless of their arrangement or the order in which they were counted.
