Description

Have students consider the interactions between the Spanish and the Aztec using a variety of texts and images. Students will consider how the Aztecs and Cortes's forces matched up, as well as the long-term effects of Spanish colonization and exploitation in the Americas.

Student activity includes:

  • Background information on the Aztec Empire, led by Moctezuma, and the Spanish conquistador forces, led by Hernan Cortes
  • Questions where students must analyze either texts or images
  • 3 different art pieces depicting Spanish and Aztec interaction
  • text and images regarding the devastating effects of smallpox on the Aztecs
  • summary of the Spanish defeat of Tenochtitlan
  • summary of long-term effects of Spanish colonization and exploitation of indigenous peoples in the Americas
