Description

This is a set of three coordinate grids containing the coordinate pairs of three animals from The One and Only Ivan (by Katherine Applegate): a gorilla, an elephant, and a dog. Although they are animals from that novel, they can be used on their own without referencing the book. These are all original pieces of art I drew then listed the appropriate coordinates. They provide good practice in finding and plotting coordinates on a grid - one of the Common Core math standards for Grade 5. Although there is a specific common core math standard at 5th grade for coordinate pairs, these grids are appropriate for Grades 3 - 8. These would be a great accompaniment to a unit on The One and Only Ivan, animals, for math enrichment, gifted-and-talented students, or early finishers.

Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, called axes, to define a coordinate system, with the intersection of the lines (the origin) arranged to coincide with the 0 on each line and a given point in the plane located by using an ordered pair of numbers, called its coordinates. Understand that the first number indicates how far to travel from the origin in the direction of one axis, and the second number indicates how far to travel in the direction of the second axis, with the convention that the names of the two axes and the coordinates correspond (e.g., 𝘹-axis and 𝘹-coordinate, 𝘺-axis and 𝘺-coordinate).
