Description

Welcome to Cooking with Kids, your ticket to teaching students to cook virtually!

Cooking With Kids activities work especially well during distance learning!  At what other time would you be able to have each student make a recipe at the same time, with enough space and resources for all? And with no expense to you! With distance learning and Cooking Class by Zoom, every student has access to a full kitchen and also adult supervision.  They also learn how to set up their supplies and clean up after, both essential parts of cooking that may be overlooked in a classroom setting. An added bonus is the low cost, as each family buys their own supplies and ingredients!  This also allows families to adjust recipes to fit their needs.  If a student is allergic to the spinach in Cheesy Stovetop Pasta, they can omit it, or substitute with another type of greens.  On several occasions, families have chosen to double a recipe, as was the case with Amish Sugar Cookies. The family gave a few dozen as neighborhood gifts, while freezing others for baking at a later date.

Getting students motivated can be difficult during distance learning. I have used Cooking With Kids activities both as a reward for students who complete all the week’s work, and as a fun party activity (Mason Jar Ice Cream). As a reward for completed work, this has been very effective and has led to a dramatic increase in the number of students doing assignments.

This recipe is for Pumpkin Muffins with Mix-ins, a great choice to use with students who like to add their own spin to a recipe and personalize it. The tasty mix-ins make this a very versatile recipe. Depending on which mix-in chosen, these can be healthy enough for breakfast or a delicious dessert!

All Cooking with Kids products includes the recipe, a supply list, and a teacher's guide. The guide includes tips for implementation during distance learning, suggestions fo facilitating discussions during the cooking class that tie to math and science, as well as a measurement experiment with 2 mini lessons.

If you haven't tried cooking with your students before, and are hesitant to purchase, download my FREEBIE Cooking with Kids: Homemade Chocolate Pudding to try it out!

Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table. For example, know that 1 ft is 12 times as long as 1 in. Express the length of a 4 ft snake as 48 in. Generate a conversion table for feet and inches listing the number pairs (1, 12), (2, 24), (3, 36),...
Understand a fraction 𝘢/𝘣 with 𝘢 > 1 as a sum of fractions 1/𝘣.
Decompose a fraction into a sum of fractions with the same denominator in more than one way, recording each decomposition by an equation. Justify decompositions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model. Examples: 3/8 = 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8; 3/8 = 1/8 + 2/8; 2 1/8 = 1 + 1 + 1/8 = 8/8 + 8/8 + 1/8.
Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction by a whole number.
Understand a fraction 𝘢/𝘣 as a multiple of 1/𝘣. For example, use a visual fraction model to represent 5/4 as the product 5 × (1/4), recording the conclusion by the equation 5/4 = 5 × (1/4).
