What educators are saying

Great resource with plenty of practice for my student who needs a lot of repetition and practice to be successful with a skill.
These were great to use with small groups of students who need extra practice before state testing. The practice was clear and easy to understand. Thanks for a great product!

Description

This unit effectively scaffolds understanding of converting customary measurements. Kids use conversion tables (charts) to find even equivalencies and solve word problems. Then they move to mixed measures. Worksheets include length (inches, feet, and yards), capacity (cups, pints, quarts, and gallons), and weight (ounces, pounds, and tons).

Tasks scaffold from least to most complex. For each set of units, worksheets include conversion tables, numeric and word problems with even equivalences, and numeric and word problems with mixed measures.

Units of measurement are also sequenced from least to most difficult.

  • First, students work with feet and yards. Because they’re only multiplying and dividing by three, this gives them an easy start.
  • Second, they convert between inches and feet. Although kids are only working with two units, they must now multiply and divide by twelve.
  • Third, they move to cups, pints, quarts, and gallons. Now students are dealing with four units. Therefore, problems are segmented to support their understanding.
  • Fourth, kids solve problems involving ounces, pounds, and tons. Although they only move between sets of two units (ounces to pounds and pounds to tons), the multipliers are higher (16 and 2,000).

17 worksheets scaffold students to understanding of U.S. customary conversion. Each set includes conversion tables (charts), number and word problems for even measures, and number and word problems for mixed measures.

Resources support your fourth or fifth grade students – and you!

  • Conversion tables provide support when kids need it most.
  • Then they steadily scaffold to understanding of more difficult concepts.
  • Activities address the intent of your standards. For example, if you teach CCSS 5.MD.A.1, you can rest assured that students will be able to convert within the customary measurement system and use the conversions to solve real world problems.

Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table. For example, know that 1 ft is 12 times as long as 1 in. Express the length of a 4 ft snake as 48 in. Generate a conversion table for feet and inches listing the number pairs (1, 12), (2, 24), (3, 36),...
Convert among different-sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system (e.g., convert 5 cm to 0.05 m), and use these conversions in solving multi-step, real world problems.
