Description

Your students will read sentences and paragraphs related to Thanksgiving. To answer the twelve multiple-choice questions, they will need to use context clues to decipher the meaning of each word. Words include: delectable, overindulged, aroma, famished, devour, carve, hardships, adequate, harsh, benevolent, and provisions.

I created this because I have found that not only my EL students, but the vast majority of students at my school struggle with this type of question on multiple-choice tests.

All of the questions have this wording:

Which word or phrase means about the same as _____?

********This resource is available in three formats:

  1. Traditional Printables- Print the PDF and distribute the pencil-and-paper worksheet.
  2. Easel Activity- Students complete this digital version of the activity on a device. It contains 13 slides. Students read each passage and answer each multiple-choice question related to the meaning of underlined words. This activity is self-checking, so students receive immediate feedback. On the last slide, students determine how many slides they answered correctly. Then, they choose 1-3 Thanksgiving stickers (based on how many correct answers they had), and drag them to their water bottle.
  3. Easel Assessment- Students complete this self-grading quiz on a device, as well. After reading a passage, students select the meaning of the underlined word from a list of four possible answer choices. With this option, the teacher chooses whether or not his or her students receive immediate feedback.
