What educators are saying

Wonderful resource and exactly what I needed to practice this important skill. Also, it was so fun connected to the season!
We always need new resources for teaching and practicing with context clues. This makes is fun with a Halloween theme.

Learning Objective

Students will use context clues to determine the meanings of unfamiliar words.

Description

Your students will read six stories related to Halloween. To answer the seventeen multiple-choice questions, they will need to use context clues to decipher the meaning of a word. Words include: specter, domicile, predilection, penchant, loathe, intrepid, eschew, foiled, abashed, copious, tepid, abashed, culled, obstreperous, and emanating.

I created this because I have found that not only my ELL's, but the vast majority of students at my school struggle with this type of question on multiple-choice tests.

Most of the questions are:

Which word or phrase means about the same as _____ as it is used in this passage?

The remaining questions are:

Which word or phrase most helps the reader determine the meaning of _______?

This worksheet can be printed back-to-back. An answer key is included.

********This resource is available in three formats:

  1. Traditional Printables- Print the PDF and distribute the pencil-and-paper worksheet.
  2. Easel Activity- Students complete this digital version of the activity on a device. It contains 18 slides. Students read each passage and answer each multiple-choice question related to the meaning of underlined words. This activity is self-checking, so students receive immediate feedback. On the last slide, students determine how many slides they answered correctly. Then, they choose 1-3 Halloween stickers (based on how many correct answers they had), and drag them to their water bottle.
  3. Easel Assessment- Students complete this self-grading quiz on a device, as well. After reading a passage, students select the meaning of the underlined word from a list of four possible answer choices. With this option, the teacher chooses whether or not his or her students receive immediate feedback.
