Learning Objective

Students will use context clues within a sentence to determine the meanings of unknown words.

Description

Keep your students engaged as they use context clues to define underlined words within a sentence. The resource consists of four worksheets and an optional craftivity. Students also identify the five types of context clues, which include synonyms, antonyms, definition, inference, and examples.

FOUR TRADITIONAL WORKSHEETS:

  • This resource features two sets of worksheets! One set of two worksheets contains simpler words, and it is designed for middle elementary students or students who have limited language proficiency. (I typically use this version with third-grade students.)
  • One set of two worksheets contains more challenging words, and it is designed for upper elementary students or students who have limited language proficiency. (I typically use this version with fourth-grade and fifth-grade students.)
  • Your students will read 11 sentences with underlined words. After using context clues to determine the word's meaning, they write the meaning at the bottom of the notepad. Next, they highlight the words within each sentence that helped them determine the meaning. Finally, they identify the type of context clue the author provided to help readers understand the meaning of the underlined word.

PRINTABLE CRAFTIVITY VERSION:

  • After completing the worksheet, students color and cut out the magnifying glasses, notepads, and sentences. They sort the pieces into the five categories of context clues. Finally, they follow the written directions to glue the pieces onto a sheet of construction paper. The finished products make a unique bulletin board or fun school hallway display! It can also be used as a novel entry in an interactive notebook!
  • A complete direction page (with photos) is included that you can place under your doc camera so that students can refer to the directions as they complete and assemble the project. Answer keys are also included.

TPT EASEL ACTIVITY:

I created a new, colorful version for this DIGITAL format. Students can complete this activity on a device. It contains 22 slides. Students read the sentence on each notepad and use context clues to determine the meaning of the underlined word. Students type the word's meaning in the answer box. They also use the highlighting tool to highlight clues within the sentence. Finally, they identify the type of clue used and they move the corresponding magnifying glass to the notepad.
