Description

As the title implies, Computer Keyboarding for English Language Development is a typing text for ESL students. I have used it with young adults in all levels of our pre-college program. In addition, it is being used in library literacy programs, high schools, and sheltered English programs elsewhere in the United States. It is becoming clear to teachers who are responsible for preparing learners to access the internet, to prepare for jobs, or to succeed in high school or college that these students benefit by becoming comfortable with keyboarding.

Language Development: In contrast to mainstream keyboarding books or keyboarding programs designed for native speakers, the content of this text is very accessible to the ESL student. The words were selected from low and intermediate ESL textbooks, from lists of essential words for ESL students, and from lists generated by my colleagues of frequently misspelled words. The words reinforce spelling and pronunciation patterns ("light, height, fight") as well as rules which govern the spelling of various affixes ("sit, sitting, eat, eating, like, liking").
