Description
Targets multiple meaning words AND context clues in a systematic way with this printable and digital resource!
It includes two files:
1 - Digital Multiple Meaning Words in Context (180+ unique slides)
The first file included is a digital, clickable PDF file targeting 30 different multiple meaning words in sentences. This activity introduces the idea of using context to determine the meaning of a word. It challenges your students to think about what function a word is in the sentence. Is it an action? Describing word? A thing?
Each sentence and word meaning is targeted in 4 steps: read, look for clues, check, imagine.
Read: Read two sentences that show two different meanings of a pair of multiple meaning words.
Look For Clues: Looking at one sentence at a time, identify clues that help you understand what the multiple meaning word means.
Check: Then, looking at the same sentence, select the image that shows the correct meaning of the word. Get instant feedback if you're right (with reflection questions).
Imagine: Visualize and discuss a new sentence that shows/uses BOTH meanings of the targeted multiple meaning word.
Examples of words targeted are: match, bear/bare, bark, tear, scale(s), bow, and peace/piece.
2 - Context Clues (78 pages)
The second file includes printable worksheets and explanation pages that systematically and directly teach 5 different types of context clues and provide practice opportunities for each. Each worksheet includes editable text boxes so you can use it directly on your computer in case that's easier for you!
The 5 types of context clues that are targeted in this resource are:
- Definition Context Clues
- Synonym Context Clues
- Antonym Context Clues
- Example Context Clues
- General Inference Context Clues
It also includes:
- Worksheets for mixed context clues (all 5 types mixed together)
- Paragraph length context clues
- AND 3 assessment and progress monitoring probes!
Last, this file includes teaching pages that explain context clues in general and each targeted type.
