Description
Are you looking to incorporate the high-interest text The Handmaid’s Tale into your curriculum? This unit is designed for AP Literature but can be modified for ELA 11 or 12, and if you are a bit wary of requiring the possibly controversial book for all students, they get to choose between it or The Awakening all while the whole class reads A Doll’s House which are both part of the public domain and can be found online if you do not have copies already. Students are introduced to all three texts in a Prezi with corresponding handout to help them make a decision about which novel they would like to read. Then, students will make comparisons between the play read in class and the novel they select for their Book Club while reading through the feminist lens. All of which will be discussed in groups, as a whole class, and in two Socratic Seminars with the topic of “Having read and watched multiple articles and videos in relation to feminism, take a stance on whether or not you think feminism is an important or relevant issue today.” Not to worry, there is plenty of opportunity to change their perspective with the engaging scaffolding activities provided. Included in this unit: Feminist Lens questions, Getting to Theme Rubric, Claim, Cite, Clarify Rubric, Socratic Seminar guidelines for inner and outer circle and self-assessment, Feminist Text Set, Book Club Minutes, My Essential Literature, Discussion Questions, Group Work Self-Assessment, OPTICAL painting analysis, archetypal lens vocabulary, Speaking and Listening Rubric, Analytical essay outline and graphic, thesis statement examples, writing growth goal, and AP writing paper. Many of these can be used again on their own in units you already have to strengthen what your students learn from this unit. Get ready to engage students with powerful literature and relevant topics.
