Description

This is a fun way to get students up and moving as well as giving them the ability to use different units of measurement!

Directions:

Give students 3 pieces of paper and a pair of scissors. Have them cut one piece of paper at a time, trying to make a different length piece every time. Once finished, measure with a variety of objects (could be a yard stick, ruler, cubes, etc). Record their measurements in the space provided and circle the longest piece of paper. This is also a great STEM activity!

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Order three objects by length; compare the lengths of two objects indirectly by using a third object.
Express the length of an object as a whole number of length units, by laying multiple copies of a shorter object (the length unit) end to end; understand that the length measurement of an object is the number of same-size length units that span it with no gaps or overlaps.
Measure the length of an object by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and measuring tapes.
Estimate lengths using units of inches, feet, centimeters, and meters.
Measure to determine how much longer one object is than another, expressing the length difference in terms of a standard length unit.
