What educators are saying

These scaffolded worksheets really helped my students understand comparing fractions while being able to practice finding the equivalent fractions in order to compare them.
This is a great resource for comparing fractions to benchmarks. I love the variety of worksheets that are included.

Description

Comparing and ordering fractions - especially fractions with unlike denominators - can be a complicated skill for many students. Building a solid understanding of the fraction 1/2 can help students learn to use 1/2 as a benchmark and make this difficult skill easier. This mostly no prep resource scaffolds comparing and ordering fractions so that even your struggling students can better understand how to compare fractions.

This resource focuses only on comparing fractions less than 1 and primarily uses fractions with an even denominator.

Save over 30% when you buy this as part of my Fractions: Mega Bundle.

In this resource, students have the opportunity to compare fractions to 1/2 using a variety of visual models, including pictures and number lines. After practice with visual models (including fractions on a number line), students will compare fractions to 1/2 without that scaffold in place.

Included in this resource are:

  • 8 fraction activities that help scaffold students so they can successfully compare fractions with unlike denominators to 1/2
  • a no prep "Beat the Clock" game to help you easily assess student understanding
  • a snowball fight and scavenger hunt activity to help students practice comparing fractions

These activities can be used as comparing fractions workstations, homework, review, math centers, differentiated activities, morning work, and more, and are ideal for 3rd and 4th grade students that are building fraction skills.

Check out the preview to see everything included.

If your students are still struggling with understanding 1/2, then check out my Fractions: Understanding 1/2 resource.

Explain equivalence of fractions in special cases, and compare fractions by reasoning about their size.
Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators, e.g., by creating common denominators or numerators, or by comparing to a benchmark fraction such as 1/2. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.
