What educators are saying

I needed a rubric for communication breakdowns, and when I found this resource it was exactly what I needed. I was able to use the rubric to baseline and progress monitor their goal. The visual of strategies was great as a print and go for teachers. Thank you!
This is an amazing resource! Engaging and my students learn so much from it. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

Description

Teaching students to recognize communication breakdown and repair their messages is a vital pragmatic skill for effective communication.

⭐️ This product includes photos of 8 children and 8 adults showing a confused expression to begin the discussion of what communication breakdown looks like. It also includes written and visual cues for 6 repair strategies: repeat, speak slowly, speak clearly, say less. or more, say it differently, show. There is also an accompanying Repairing Communication Breakdown Rubric for baseline data and progress monitoring. Use this to drive explicit instruction for targeting communication breakdown.

Suggested Rubric Use:

Print page 8. Copy for each child, as needed. You can use the rubric for multiple sessions using different colors for baseline and subsequent progress monitoring (5 trials). There are 4 separate rubrics on the page for assessing various levels of communication breakdown: 1) identifying communication breakdown 2) target repair strategy use 3) successfully repairing messages 4) repair across settings and partners.

Rubric Directions: This rubric includes 4 separate skills to assess as part of repairing a communication breakdown. The first row focuses on a student’s ability to identify when a breakdown in their communication occurs. The second focuses on target strategy use. This row can be used separately for each strategy targeted, if desired (ex: Speak Slowly, Say Less or More, etc.). The third row is for charting successful repair during communication opportunities and the final row allows charting across multiple settings and partners. Each rubric has space below for adding notes.

Suggested Visuals Prep:

Print the photos on pages 6 & 7 and place in a sheet protector or laminate. Use these to help students begin to recognize communication breakdown. Print the visuals on pages 9 & 10. Choose black & white or color. Cut each sheet in half long ways, as each page provides two copies of the visual supports. You can laminate for durability, if reusing. Pages 11 & 12 offer color and black & white options of the visuals with an area for writing or drawing additional notes for student/SLP use.
