Common Core Writing Tips for State Assessments
Writing arguments, informative texts, and narratives are all part of the new Common Core Language Arts Standards. This lesson helps develop background knowledge for the different types of writing prompts students might see based on these standards.
Help students understand the different types of writing for the state assessments. This lesson offers guided notes that go along with the PowerPoint. The slideshow covers letters, editorials, narratives, articles, and tips for writing for the state test. I have used this lesson with my sixth grade students to review the types of writing before we begin practicing them. Students can use the notes as a guide when they practice each type writing in your class. It has a graphic organizer shaped as a hand for students to remember to include at least 5 paragraphs in their writing. The notes discuss the importance of remembering the form, audience and purpose when writing for state assessments. Each type of writing goes into specific details taken from the standards such as including dialogue in a narrative.
The notes are saved in a zip file. Make sure you save the file to your desktop, right click the file, hit extract all. This allows you to save the separate documents to any location you want on your computer.
The notes for students are a PDF file you can print and have students fill in the blanks. The PowerPoint is yours to edit. I just ask that you don't share it or re-post it on the Internet.
