Common Core: Symmetry, Math, Culture and Art. Indian Kolam

Every summer I venture off to some distant land. In 2009, I spent the summer volunteering in an orphanage in a small little village in Tamil Nadu, India. This resource was created shortly after my trip and has been used in my classroom ever since.

This cross-curricular project combines geometry, art, and culture. Kids learn all about an Indian art called kolam. After learning about kolam, students create their own. This student created art gives kids an in-depth look at symmetry.

This packet also includes basic Hindi phrases. Kids will learn how to say "Hello," "Thank you," "How are you," "No big deal," and "I am speaking Hindi!"

The finished product looks great displayed during Open House.

This is a Depth of Knowledge Level 4 activity.
