Common Core Standards Based Grading Rubrics / Scoring Guides Language Arts

Switching to Standards-Based Grading could not be easier!!! I've done a lot of the ground-work... just plug this in to your curriculum and move right along!

After scouring the Common Core standards, I chunked and categorized them into 5 categories with 19 objectives. The objective include the following 5 categories: Communication Through Writing, Reading Comprehension, Critical Thinking, Vocabulary/Word Study, Presentation and Collaboration. Organizing the standards this way reduces the amount of guesswork or time taken to score assignments and assessments. I use these same 19 rubrics to score EVERYTHING I assign within my class. Students know what to expect every time, and I can clearly articulate to parents and students where their strengths and weakness are. This was designed for use in 8th grade, but could easily be adapted to other grade levels by changing key verbs to indicate the appropriate depth of knowledge or skill level.

6th and 7th grade departments in my school are just tweaking this to fit their grade-level common core standards.

Within the five categories are the following 19 objectives (clearly pulled straight from the common core standards)... Comm through Writing: Organization in writing, purpose and audience, writing techniques (style), language conventions; Reading Comprehension: Summary and main idea (theme), graphic organizers, point of view/source, implied meaning; Critical Thinking: critical reasoning, comparing/relating, most effective support; Vocabulary/Word study: Understanding vocab, enhancing vocab, impact of word choice, parts of speech; Presentation and Collaboration: Discussion and collaboration, oral presentation, condeucting interviews, visual displays

This product is the actual scoring guide for all those objective outlined in the common core standards. I have given clear descriptors for each of the following four columns: Advanced, Proficient, Progressing, Beginning (4,3,2,1).
