Common Core English Language Arts Learning Standards Cumulative Progress Report for 8th Grade

Product/Materials Preface [Grade 8]:

These ELA Common Core State Standard Progress Report Forms are based on the New York State 8th Grade version of the CCSS. Provided is 14 pages of 6 forms—Literature, Informational text, Writing, Speaking and Listening, Language, and Foundational Skills. There are 2 versions of each from—1 version with color shading and 1 version in full black and white text for easy copying.

Please use this Cumulative Progress Report to record data on students’ proficiencies and weaknesses. DO NOT USE a check system but rather ENTER THE DATE in the corresponding cell whenever you assess a standard. You can easily record up to three entries for each cell. The range of levels include: Under-developed, Developing and Proficient. By the end of the year each standard should have been assessed at least three times. You must also understand that by the end of the year every student will not be proficient in every standard.

Also, some children can regress after they have been assessed in a given area and fall a little behind so don’t freak out. You will definitely encounter a vast array of results! Remember your accuracy is only as good as your mode of assessment. We have to embrace the Common Core Learning Standards and this Cumulative Report will help us become more familiar and comfortable with Common Core language. Even though I don’t recommend this for the lower elementary grades, I let my upper grade students in 6-8 use the progress report form to record their own proficiency level, or lack thereof, for some of the standards. Letting them hold and utilize the form helped them to understand what was required of them and motivated them to strive for success. It gave them a better understanding of the rigorous requirements of the Common Core.

Lastly, you are not limited to using this form as a yearly endeavor. You can focus on different particular areas as you curriculum deems fit (by semesters or units), but remember after any given quarter or semester no teacher should have covered and assessed every standard. These standards were meant to be caught over the course of a year!
