Comic Strip Conversations Introduction Starter Kit- Social Skills for Autism ABA

Carol Gray mentioned how this is a great method to help children with Asperger's / High Functioning Autism learn conversational skills.

This Comic Strip Conversations introduction starter kit can definitely help you!

Most of the follow-up activities included in this kit have been created to only require pointing to the correct answer - e.g. Yes or No, True or False - but, you can ask students to circle or color the correct answer too.

Keep reading to find out what this kit contains:

* 7 x Conversation Posters - helps students differentiate speech bubbles, thoughts, LOUD words, quiet words, listening, group listening, interrupting before the other has finished, interrupting a conversation, and unison speaking - this helps students to learn what the people in the comic strips are doing, e.g. thinking, speaking, interrupting, whispering, shouting, listening, group speaking, etc.

* 11 x Conversation Puzzles - students need to pair the correct conversation symbol/image to the correct name, e.g. speech bubble. (contains a blank template to include any symbols/images the students will use regularly in their comic strip conversation drawings - as you continue to introduce this concept, it may be a good idea to have some blanks handy so students can add them to their files for easy reference).

* "I hate the rain!" Comic Strip Conversation - contains 9 comic scenes and a cover. There are two characters - A (male) and B (female) - A is stressed as it is raining, and he really hates his clothes getting wet. This is portrayed as one of his triggers, and shows slight sensory distress. B helps to calm him by offering her umbrella. This makes A very happy. Some added humor at the end when A and B go to draw a sunny picture so they can think about dry weather instead. (This conversation only uses speech bubbles and no color wording to slowly ease students into Comic Strip Conversations - as they progress, a color guide will be introduced which shows which how the character is feeling when they speak, as sometimes, written speech and speech can be said in different ways to mean different things).

* 3 x Related-Drawing Activities

* 8 x Feelings Questions - reflect on how the characters felt, and how the student would feel.

* 4 x Observation Multiple Choice Questions - e.g. which character is A?

* 8 x Review Questions - Yes or No question format - e.g. Does A like the rain?

* 8 x Thinking Questions - e.g. If you do not like rain, how would you like to be helped? - These questions can be group discussion, one-to-one, or written.

* 8 x True or False Questions - e.g. A likes having wet clothes?

* 5 x What would you say? - This can be an oral or written activity. There are two speech bubbles on the page, one has an example of what someone has said, and the student is required to share what they would reply - e.g. "I'm going to splash you with the puddles!"
