Collisions! Physics Project on Force & Motion - IB MYP - Lesson & Project Choice
- Google Drive™ folder
Description
Collisions! Physics Project on Force & Motion (IB MYP version) covers key physics concepts of Newton’s 3 laws of motion, forces, momentum, and impact of science on society. Lesson includes great collision videos to provide real life examples and reviews of elastic and inelastic collisions. Students choice project (Car Collisions or Sports Collisions) focuses how Newton’s laws of motion are demonstrated in colliding objects. Includes presentation (34 slides) with lesson, types of collisions, videos, project instructions, rubric and teacher resources. Student project templates include instructions, resources, framework, questions & rubric (32 slides - 16 slides x 2 choices).

Additional Resources to Assist:
Objective: Students complete a project that focuses on collisions and how Newton’s laws of motion are demonstrated in colliding objects. Students work on researching and application skills within the context of physics concepts. This is a summative project that reinforces previously learned content.
Science Standards - TEKS: Science Skills: 8.3(D) relate the impact of research on scientific thought and society, including the history of science and contributions of scientists as related to the content; 8.6(C) investigate and describe applications of Newton's three laws of motion such as in vehicle restraints, sports activities, amusement park rides, Earth's tectonic activities and rocket launches
MYP IB - Sciences - Year 3 (8th grade) Criterion D - Reflecting on the Impacts of Science
NGSS: MS-PS2-1. (Relates to) Apply Newton’s Third Law to design a solution to a problem involving the motion of two colliding objects. Connections to Engineering, Technology, and Applications of Science - Influence of Science, Engineering, and Technology on Society and the Natural World - The uses of technologies and any limitations on their use are driven by individual or societal needs, desires, and values; by the findings of scientific research.
ATL/SEL Skills: These are known as “Approaches to Learning” skills (ATL). These are more commonly known as SEL or social and emotional skills. ATL Skills for this lesson: Critical Thinking Skills - Revise understanding based on new information and evidence.
Lesson Structure and Teacher Tips: This lesson will take multiple class periods to complete. One day for the introduction, and multiple days for the project work time.
