Description

Teachers: This resource can be used in your classroom to create “hero” binders for your students to use all year. Even as first graders, my students love having all of their things in one place and it makes for a happy teacher as well. I have included binder covers ready and labeled for 25 students (and one blank if you are not interested in numbering them), a table of contents (and one blank to customize for your own needs), the title pages I use for each section, the resources that can be found behind each section (more details below), and a few pictures to show how I set these up the student’s binders in my classroom.

Literacy: I have included a recording sheet that you can copy each week or print and laminate (for continued use) for a read the room center. Each week my students “read the room” using this record sheet and the identified phonics skill. I have also included a poem (from a sited source) that correlates with each lessson in the Journeys first grade reading curriculum. We use these poems in centers each week and the students read them for fluency practice as well. This may or may not apply to you depending on whether or not you use the Journeys curriculum, but it may be helpful to use as your students practice fluency in your classroom.

Writing: I have included a word list for each letter of the alphabet that my students use when they write. These lists can be added to when needed as students come across words they do not know how to spell.

Math: I have included a vocabulary sheet for each lesson in the Everyday Math first grade curriculum. Each vocabulary sheet has a place for the word, definition, picture, example, and nonexample. I start the year giving the students the definition and picture and then slowly take this away as they more independently complete this vocabulary work. This may or mat not apply to you depending on whether or not you use the Everyday Math curriculum, but I have included a blank vocabulary page that can be copied as needed for your math vocabulary that is relevant to you and your classroom. I have also included reference sheets that have numbers, money, time, a hundreds chart, number line, number words, days of the week, and months of the year. I actually laminate these and put them in the back of the binder to use year after year.

Science: I have included a blank vocabulary page that can be copied when needed for science vocabulary that is relevant to you and your classroom.

Data: The last section in my student’s binder is their data section. I have created many resources for this (none specific to “superheros”) that can be found here on Teachers Pay Teachers. It is not included in this resource.

Credit: Thank you to Melonheadz, Kevin and Amanda Fonts, Kimberly Geswein Fonts, Common Core Standards, and Teachers Pay Teachers for your help in making this product available to other teachers and their students.

**This has specific content to be used in first grade with the Journeys Reading curriculum and the Everyday Math curriculum or to differentiate in kindergarten or second grade. However, the "bones" of this binder set up could be used across the board at any grade level.
