What educators are saying

I used this as part of our STAAR prep, and it went great! The students were engaged and it was a great way for the m to practice writing for historical purposes as well
My students loved this activity. They were engaged and did better on the quiz. The activity was organized and easy to understand.

Description

In this Civil War soldiers close reading activity, students explore the various reasons that people enlisted and fought for both the Union and Confederacy in the Civil War. Students read over 8 excerpts from a variety of primary and secondary sources to understand the reasons that ALL soldiers enlisted, fought, and died during the Civil War. Students learn why white soldiers fought in the Union and Confederacy, why black soldiers fought in the Union, and why women joined the war effort.

Students will complete the included worksheet by analyzing each source closely to understand the motivation for each group's service. Students will summarize the source, copy down the source number, then offer proof of their answer by providing the quote that justifies their answer. A final prompt is also included to compile student learning!
