What educators are saying

Loved this resource! I used it with my 11th grade US History class and they were extremely engaged and had lots of fun!
This is a great cumulative project to help address all key issues of the Civil War. I like that each group can take one important person or event and teach the rest of the class about it.

Description

Bring student research into your classroom with this simple digital or print project! Students research a Civil War topic and then create either a digital slide or poster to present to their peers.  Your students will become the teacher as they explain the significance of a battle, event or leader to the class!

Students will demonstrate multiple historical skills, including:

  • gathering information to answer a question–how did individuals and events change the course of the Civil War?--and
  • demonstrating understanding of a topic by teaching others.

While this project was designed for the high school U.S. History classroom, it can be easily modified for both AP or Dual Credit U.S. History (APUSH) as well as middle school U.S. History.

All materials to use with students--Student Directions, the presentation slides, the list of topics and the rubric--can be fully edited by you in Google Slides™!

Included in this download:

  • TWO VERSIONS for you, the teacher, to use with your students--either print or digital.
  • Student Directions (PDF)
  • Note-taking suggestions with an emphasis on using credible and reliable sources (PDF)
  • A list of 32 Topics (PDF).  This comprehensive topic list gives you the option to make this a PARTNER project OR an INDIVIDUAL project.
  • Teacher Directions (PDF) including tips based on my own experiences completing this project with my students.
  • A rubric (PDF)
  • For the Digital Option: A slides presentation (Google Slides™) that students can edit to create a presentation for the class. Student directions are fully incorporated within the slides.

Examples of topics:

  • The Emancipation Proclamation
  • The Gettysburg Address
  • Ulysses S. Grant
  • And many more! (32 topics total)

This project meets the Common Core Writing History Standard: Research to Build and Present Knowledge (CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.11-12.7).
