What educators are saying

This was a great opener for a gallery walk activity on the life of a Civil War soldier. Tugged at their heart strings a little!
Loved this activity! I used this as an optional activity during a game board style unit. It would have been nice to have more information on how he died. The kids were curious.

Description

This Civil War Primary Source Letter Worksheet features an amazing, moving letter from Union officer Sullivan Ballou was written a week before he died at the Battle of Bull Run. It was famously featured in Ken Burns' documentary on the Civil War as an eloquent and touching ode to American values and the bonds of family.

After reading a slightly shortened version of the letter, students complete a set of analysis questions for which an answer key is included. Finally, students compose their own letter using a set of brief instructions that require them to demonstrate knowledge of the Civil War, battles, generals, and how life was for soldiers.

An answer key and editable Google Docs version of the activity are both included for your convenience!

This resource can also be downloaded at a discount as part of my Civil War and Reconstruction Unit Bundle.
